The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. The Dutch government underestimated the consequences and became mired in typically Dutch consensus politics. Only when the Taliban took Kabul did The Hague decide to begin evacuations.
A gap in the fence at the airport became the only route to safety. Who was evacuated, and who was left behind? How were the toughest decisions made in the heat of the moment? How could the Netherlands have been so surprised by the Taliban takeover? And how decisive were individuals during those days of collective panic?
